"We're Going to Exist Friends" is a vocal by the American alternative rock ring White Stripes from their album White Claret Cells. It was released in belatedly 2002, and tells the story of meeting a new friend at the beginning of a school year. Through its lyrics, information technology is able to evoke the simplicity and nostalgia of childhood.

"Suzy Lee," who is mentioned in the song in "We're Going to Exist Friends", makes recurring appearances in White Stripes' discography, including in their eponymous album, which includes the song "Suzy Lee", equally well as on Become Backside Me Satan,[1] which is dedicated to Suzy Lee, "Wherever she may be..."

The song speaks of a girl and boy who become friends while engaging in activities in and out of school. AllMusic said the vocal "takes a cornball look back at the innocence of schoolhouse days with a surprisingly sensitive vocal equally [Jack] expertly paints impressions of days past with deft economy."[2]

The video features Jack and One thousand thousand White on a couch in forepart of Jack'south house at night time. Jack is playing a guitar, while Meg is sleeping aslope him. Jack wakes One thousand thousand as the song ends. The cover of the single is a withal from the video.

The video was shot in 1 have after the band had finished shooting for the video for the song Hotel Yorba.

Tom Maginnis with AllMusic called the song a "sweet acoustic ballad,"[two] and NME chosen it "fey childhood-sweetheart folk."[3] The A.Five. Club said it was "the album's most shocking track."[4]

In popular culture [edit]

Featured in the opening credits of the 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite, author/managing director Jared Hess commented that, originally, they could not observe the song they were looking for, simply wanted to utilize "We're Going to Be Friends," so a copy of Napoleon Dynamite was sent to The White Stripes, who promptly canonical the song'southward apply in the picture show.[ citation needed ]

Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson recorded a cover of the song on his album Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Moving picture Curious George. In 2008 and 2009, it was used in a promo for PBS Kids.[ citation needed ] Bright Optics covered the vocal with invitee First Assistance Kit for the charity album Cool for School: For the Benefit of the Lunchbox Fund.[5]

The song is also featured in the Life in Pieces episode "Sexting Mall Lemonade Heartbreak". CBS included a song in commercials for its 2006 plan The Class that resembled the tune of "We're Going to Be Friends."[6] When magazine Broadcasting & Cablevision reached out to Monotone Direction (the direction visitor of the band at the time), the company declined to comment, just indicated that the band was aware of the vocal and were not pleased.[6] In subsequent commercials, CBS used a different vocal.[6]

This vocal was featured in the 2017 film Wonder. The film used two versions of the vocal, the original version performed past the White Stripes and a comprehend version performed by Caroline Pennell.

This is one of Conan O'Brien'south favorite songs by The White Stripes and at his request, they performed it on the final episode of Belatedly Night with Conan O'Brien on Feb 20, 2009.[ commendation needed ] A portion of the song is also the opening theme to his podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend.

In May 2017, Third Man Records appear a children's book based on the unmarried to be released on Nov 21, 2017, presently afterward The White Stripes' 20th ceremony.[vii] The book became bachelor on Nov seven, 2017 for pre-release events and limited distribution.[8] It was illustrated by Elinor Blake,[vii] an illustrator and animator for shows such as The Ren and Stimpy Show and Pee-wee's Playhouse.[8] The book came with a digital copy of the original vocal and a cover version performed by The Woodstation Unproblematic Schoolhouse Singers,[7] besides equally a cover by April March.[8]
